Yes, you heard it here! Catacomb Kitties is not available on the Nintendo Switch. And it plays even better on the Switch than it does on the PC. Which makes perfect sense, it’s very a much inspired by console style JRPG’s, especially those of the classic, 8bit era.
In fact, you could say that most of the games we create here at Riddlefox Games, and the games I’ve been creating since I was in my early twenties, were approximations of my favorite console games on the PC. I coded for gamepads first, and then tried to emulate a gamepad format using a keyboard (and then added mouse support for somethings in Catcomb Kitties on the PC), trying to imitate how emulators handled console style input on a PC device.
And with this realization, and the realization that my games sell so much better on the Nintendo Switch than anywhere else, I’ve decided to make my games for this device first and foremost going forward. A month after these releases, I’ll back port it to the PC/Mac/Linux, using a similar gamepad first design with keyboard emulation. This makes perfect sense, and to be honest, it also makes me super happy.
I started making games in the 90’s because of my love for the NES and SNES, and wanting to make games like those. I didn’t have access to the tools required to make games for those consoles, so I ended up making them in DOS for the PC instead, and imitating that style of gameplay. Later, I would do GBA development for a bit, and even made an RPG for it (that was never released…it was finished near the end of the GBA lifecycle, and it was considered too costly to try and move it to the Nintendo DS).
Great news all around!
So here you go, grab the game for you switch, and head back here for more news about the up coming Monster Heart game, as well as an in-development full length old school JRPG, done in a psuedo-3d manner. Think the Breath of Fire games on the PSX, combined with some HD2D techniques, and using the sprite stacking voxel technique. I might also have a more complex sequel to Bad Writer in the works, Bad Novelist.
This will be far longer, have more complexities…including a dayjob, rent to pay, and people to befriend and/or romance when Emily moves to a new town after her recent divorce, to work on her novel and continue her publishing career.
